3DS Ambassadors, Here Are Your Free NES Games

This week Nintendo revealed on Twitter the final five NES games they’re giving away to early adopters of the 3DS. Members of the Ambassador Program are people who have purchased the 3DS system before the price cut and visited the eShop by August 11. Nintendo has set up a page where you can check your Ambassador Status to see whether you’ll be receiving these games. Among the ten titles from the classic NES system, members will also be able to download ten Game Boy Advance games later this year. Those titles will only be available to Ambassadors and Nintendo has stated that there are currently no plans to release these games to other 3DS owners.

As of this Thursday Sept 1 the NES games available to download will be

  1. Super Mario Bros., 1985
  2. The Legend of Zelda, 1987
  3. Ice Climber, 1985
  4. Donkey Kong Jr., 1986
  5. Balloon Fight, 1986
  6. Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, 1988
  7. Wrecking Crew, 1985
  8. Yoshi, 1992
  9. Metroid, 1987
  10. Mario Open Golf, 1991

I've got a golden ticket

The games have all launched this morning in the US! Before I get into serious detail about particular games I wanted to quickly note that these are the original NES games, they’re not in 3D and I’m not sure, but I believe that for games that have 2 Players you will have to use the same system, so two Ambassadors couldn’t play Super Mario Bros. via local or online wireless communication. Also you will not be able to create a Restore Point to save your game like with Classic Virtual Console titles, so unless the game already has a save feature you will not be able to continue from where you left off.  You cannot  save your custom levels in Wrecking Crew. Edit: You can put your game in a Save State by just Pausing the game. The game will actually pick up from where your Pause State. To set up 2 Players modes hold L and R , then press Y while in the game, you can then choose between Player 1 or 2.

Nintendo has noted that while the ten GBA games are not scheduled to be released these NES titles will be available to all players some time in the future. At such time, Ambassadors will be able to redownload the games which will feature the ability to create save points and probably additional content.
